Experience: worked for Machado + Silvetti Architects, Office dA, and Doug Dolezal Architects in Boston. He has also taught architecture design studios at the Boston Architectural Center and at Northeastern University, and has been invited as a guest critic for reviews at Cal Poly Pomona, The City University of New York, Harvard University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and SCI-ARC. While in Boston he was also the gallery coordinator for the Harvard Graduate School of Design, working with Brooke Hodge to oversee the installation and curation of several shows including Carlos Jimenez, Rei Kawakubo + Commes Des Garcons, and Gio Ponti.
Currently Doing: After moving back to the desert in 2000, he established The Art Office – a multi-disciplinary design studio located in Indio, CA. He has since worked on the 27,000sf Family Life Center at the Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church, for which he and the architect of record, MKA, recently received the Grand Award in Public Design from the CMACN as well as the Excellence in New Modern Design Award from the Palm Springs Modernism Committee. He is currently working on design projects of all scales throughout the Coachella Valley ranging from commercial work to residential to Art In Public Places to furniture projects. Smith is the founding chairman of the Architecture and Design Council at the Palm Springs Art Museum established in 2003. He hopes to bring new ideas and new design to the desert and to be part of the valley’s architectural and cultural future.
