Community Drum Circle
The Joshua Tree Retreat Center (formerly Mentalphysics) will host a Community Drum Circle on Sunday, May 31, from 7 – 9 PM. Weather permitting, the circle, facilitated by popular Morongo Basin percussionist Sam Sloneker, will be held in the Center’s outdoor amphitheater.”I’m excited about our doing our first group circle of the summer outdoors beneath our beautiful night sky” says Sloneker, “All are welcome and can benefit from participating, from beginning beginners to seasoned professional musicians. This is an experience that can make a really positive difference in all our lives. Along with group drumming, with plenty of room for self-expression, we will do some simple and fun exercises designed to enhance our playing and listening skills and to increase our awareness of our vital life energies-as individuals and as an integral part of our group. Above all, we’ll enjoy a beautiful interactive evening together! So, come play with us, and bring your family and friends to join in the fun.”Studies have shown participation in group drumming to offer a number of worthwhile benefits, including artistic self-expression, community connection and interaction, an expanded sense of self and heightened sense of belonging, increased rapport with others, relief of stress, emotional balancing, and strengthening of the immune system. Participants are encouraged to bring drums, shakers, tambourines, etc.-a number of instruments will also be available at the event. There is no charge to attend, though a suggested donation of $5 per participant or $10 per family will be welcomed and appreciated. In the event of high wind or rain, the circle will move indoors.

Music: The Thriftstore All Stars
A true all-star inspirational Southern California desert band and Pappy’s Sunday House band!! THE THRIFT STORE ALL STARS all live in the city of Joshua Tree and manage themselves to a life of High Desert Energy bathing and a strict diet of thoughtful engagement in the finer things. The band itself is a core group of nine with special guests, and play mostly songs written by it’s performers; except a few favorite covers. The music could be described as bom-chicka’ish western folk, but also borders on loose drunken square dance country gone electric fantasmo!! Featuring the amazing musicianship & camaraderie of Travis Cline, Victoria Williams, Bingo, Solid Ray Woods, Carol-Ann Crandall, Tim Easton, Tal Hurley, Dee-Lo & many special guests.. if you can watch this band play and not smile, stomp, and laugh- then something is far amiss.
