In this episode of The Coachella Valley Art Scene’s Coachella Guide we explore some of our personal favorite, low-key places to go get a drink at around town.  As far as we know, none of these bars have any raging ‘Coachella’ parties going on (minus the Amigo Room – obviously), so you actually can stop in before or after the Fest and grab a cold one.

Now, mind you, please do know that this is NOT AN ADVERTISEMENT.  This is really just from us, for you, to enjoy and navigate around our hometown with.  We didn’t get paid to talk about any of these businesses, so please don’t interpret it that way.  We try to keep it real as possible on The Coachella Valley Art Scene.

These are really places that we go and spend our money at.  A majority, if not all, of these business are independently owned.  If you get a moment to check them out, please do – you’ll be happy that you did!

Bars

Okay so we all know that there will be a million pre-Coachella pool parties going on, in addition to a million Coachella after parties, but…. what if you don’t want to go to any of them?  Not everyone wants to rage on after they’ve raged all day.  Call me a loner/dork/dweeb/blogger/blogbot… but after hanging out in big crowds all day I just need my personal space.  Can a woman get some piece and quite in this town?!?!  Seeeesh.

So, we have compiled a short and sweet list of local bars that we like.  Some/most are our favorite dive bars, and others are quite sophisticated made particularly for the grown and sexy out there.

Our Top 5 Picks

We chose these top 5 based on how stiff I get my margarita with salt!!!  And, extra bonus points if they hooked it up with Patron.  Just kidding..

#1 Pick: Birba

Palm Springs, CA

Birba is a new bar in town that I am really excited about.  Not only is it managed by this super fabulous guy with great hair named David Richie who totally ‘gets it’ but it’s also home to amazing eats and spicy margaritas.  Name it, they got it. How so they serve it? Perfect.  Birba is owned by the same couple who owns Cheeky’s (my fav breakfast joint), so you know that this is a place where there is food and drink quality that you trust – top of the line, fresh, innovative, and (most importantly) tasty.  Not only are the pizzas mouth watering (I actually am salivating as I type this), and drinks tasty-tasty, but the atmosphere is quite lovely.  The bar is an outdoors venue that stays plays up to and stays true to Palm Springs’s modern twist on life.  Tastefully done from the inside out.  Yum.

622 N Palm Canyon Dr.

#2 Pick: Neil’s Lounge

Indio, CA

Now, on the other side of town in Indio, there is a bar that is quite different with a completely different kind of charm, yet it is just as an exciting place to go as Birba – for completely different reasons.  Neil’s Lounge is a place that, no matter who you are or what you look like – you’re family.  C’mon in and have a seat.  Cheers to this cheap brew, getting lost in this really random conversation about nothing and for being next up in line for the karaoke machine!  The essence of what Neil’s is all about.

Located:

80956 HWY 11

Indio, CA 92201

#3 Pick: The Hood Bar & Pizza

Palm Desert, CA

The Hood is a great little bar tucked away inside a strip mall along HWY 111, and sounds like a bad idea, but is actually a pretty good one.  Not only do they have cheap beers and good pizza, but they also usually have some pretty good art hanging on the walls submitted by locals.  If you stumble in here on a non-Coachella weekend you might find an open mic or a local band playing, you might run into and ex or a relative, you just never know.  It’s one of those kinds of places, know what I mean?

Location:

73850 HWY 111

Palm Desert, CA 92260

#4 Pick: The Red Barn

Palm Desert, CA

The Red Barn is an epic dive bar in the desert.  Need I say more?

Location:

73290 HWY 111

Palm Desert, CA 92260

(760) 346-0191

#5 Pick: The Amigo Room

Palm Springs, CA

And last, but certainly not least, we list The Amigo Room.  If you follow The Coachella Valley Art Scene on at least a monthly basis then you should know that we throw an amazing party called World Famous inside the Amigo Room on the last Saturday of every month.  So, as you can imagine, I have spent many days and nights here.  I know the menu by heart and I still love and crave it to this day.  However, during Coachella Fest weekend this place is going to be… what you called… swamped!  So, if you’re looking for a nice quiet night without DJs and all that… this isn’t exactly the place.  But, if you will be staying later past the festival or coming back at another time, then this definitely is the place (especially if it’s the last Saturday of the month).

Location:

701 E Palm Canyon Dr

Palm Springs, CA 92264
