Sounds of the Desert: Blackstrap Molasses
written by EJ Neumeyer
Drawing heavily on mid-sixties R & B of the Stax and Motown labels, Blackstrap Molasses is a young quartet from right here in the desert.
The band of Indio natives features Lisa Baeza on piano and organ, Ian Townley on bass, Sal Meza on drums and songwriter Dani Meza on guitar and vocals.
Their music features incredibly catchy rhythm section and quite a bit of tambourine shaking. Dani admittedly geeks out to tons of old soul tracks and writes songs he’d rather Aretha or Etta or Otis sang than himself. Their previous cassette EP Drag Your Hands & Feet has been in rotation at college radio stations in the San Francisco Bay area and Southern California.
The band has recently shared dates with bands like Rumspringa, Ty Segall, Jenny O, TRMRS and DJ Alf Alpha.
This Saturday, they celebrate the release of their first album, Honeycomb… Sweet to the Soul, in a hometown concert at the Date Shed.
Joining them are the Marquees from Nipomo, CA, a self-described “belo-fi” garage rock outfit that will remind you of a young, gritty Rolling Stones or Creedance Clearwater Revival, and local indie rock band, Lazy River, featuring members of Dreamcatcher and Jungles. Sodality, aka Elicia McCoy, will finish out the night with a special DJ set.
The night also marks the closing of the “Red Show” art exhibition of over two-dozen local artists, curated by Cristopher Chichocki.
