Blackstrap Molasses, Only You & Deap Vally at the Date Shed, Friday, November 25, 2011
Come boogie with Indio’s own Blackstrap Molasses as they return to the Date Shed with two awesome girl groups from Los Angeles.
Local band Blackstrap Molasses returns to headline the Date Shed for an all ages concert.  Joining them on the bill are two all-female groups from Los Angeles, Only You and Deap Vally.
Admission is open to all ages.  Doors open 9:00pm.  The Date Shed is located at 50725 Monroe St, near Avenue 51 on the grounds of the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA.  Presale tickets are available at

Rooted firmly in mid-sixties R&B of the Stax and Motown labels, this young quartet from Indio, CA abides by two guiding principles:
One: everyone has at least a little soul in them
Two: keep it simple, stupid
With that in mind, Blackstrap Molasses creates astoundingly contagious soul music from the most basic of ingredients: Rhodes and guitar play substitute for a horn section all over tight rhythms.  Songwriter Dani Meza admittedly geeks out to tons of old soul tracks and writes songs he’d rather Aretha or Etta or Otis sang than himself.  But he’s no slouch – cooing, crooning and yelping along to Cropper-style guitar work.  Lisa Baeza handles melody and horn-stabs on the piano while bassist Ian Townley lays down his best Jamerson lines with drummer Sal Meza on beat.  The combination appears to be effective.  At least one of their tracks will get stuck in your head the day after a show.  Aside from dates throughout California, the band has recently headlined a benefit for the Desert AIDS Project at Pappy & Harriet’s, packed the Date Shed for the release of their album, Honeycomb… Sweet to the Soul; and were chosen as the first band to headline the Ace Hotel’s “Revolver” artist-in-residency series.

Only You is Rachel Fannan (formerly of Sleepy Sun) joined by Cecilia Della Peruti on guitar, bassist Micayla Grace, and drummer Lia Braswell. Like a restless ghost, fresh out of the waters of a rushing river’s mirrored waves, comes a band founded on the tenacity of the spirit and a wanting to recant tragic love stories through a hurricane of elevated sounds and emotion. A fierce rhythm section wraps its eager arms around surf guitar plucks and bending strings of a sentimental nature that comforts your tongue with rich flavors, spreading all throughout your senses, leaving you ravenous for more.

Deap Vally is hard-rocking, soul-singing, sweaty two-girl blues rock. Two-girl blues-rock, you ask? Yes. Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards break blues down to its simplest, most fundamental form: beat, melody, and meaning. Troy takes the vocal lead, her wails hovering somewhere between the expressive groove of Janis Joplin and the chalkboard scratch of PJ Harvey, while Edwards holds down the beat, moving effortlessly between driving punk punch and laid-back breaks.
