Dear Coachella Valley Art Scene Readers,

Hello!  Welcome back to another lovely week here on The Coachella Valley Art Scene.

This week we are all kinds of excited to share with you all kinds of fun stuff.  Not that we never have fun stuff, as we try to keep it as fun and light on the blog as possible, it’s just…. this week it’s like, really fun stuff.  Fun like, less reading, more looking.  Fun like, less doing, more viewing.  And as you are familiar with, we always try to encourage our reader to get out there and do something to help the community (even if that’s just going to your local bar on a Friday night to support a local musician), however this week we are encouraging our reader to just sit back and get inspired.  We understand, it’s hard to always go-go-go…actually, it’s almost impossible.  To go, you need a push, and to get a push you have to first be still.  So, while you’re being still, you mine as well be in front of your computer looking at cool stuff that will eventually inspire you to get out there and make a difference, right?!?!?! Right.  That’s what we thought.

Here are a few things to inspire while sitting still:

Driving around Palm Springs the other day I saw a lot of really weird stuff happening outside of my window; suspect characters strolling the boulevard, random stuffed toys on the side of the road, and an overwhelming amount of people who have hair styles stuck in the late 1980’s.  I absolutely love it –  all these little quirky things are what ‘make’ Palm Springs, and all of these characters collectively add to the overall charm (and funkiness) of the city.  I am pretty sure it has something to do with Palm Springs being the only city in the Coachella Valley to have a Downtown, and an Uptown.  There’s no other city like Palm Springs and in my attempt to prove it I thought I’d take photographic evidence of it and share it with the Internet.  To track my record of documenting all things “weird” in Palm Springs I thought I’d hashtag each of my photos as #KeepPalmSpringsWeird while posting these images to Twitter and Instagram (and, okay, Facebook too but the hashtag feature doesn’t work there). And as much fun as I am having documenting weird things… I’d like to see what weird things you see while hanging out in Palm Springs.  Please hashtag #KeepPalmSprings weird to your photos and @thecvartscene to make sure I get it.  The good ones will go on the blog!  Let’s get this trending WorldWide!  Or, okay, at least in the Coachella Valley region.

As much as I’d like to make Palm Springs out for being the ‘weirdo’ of the desert cities… all the others carry their own weight in this category just as well.  In fact, yesterday as I was driving through Palm Desert on my way to get a coffee I came across a really great piece of street art.  Yes, you read correctly, Palm Desert.  Not sure how long it’s going to last along the side of Monterey Blvd., however, here on The Coachella Valley Art Scene blog it has the opportunity to live on and stay up forever!  In the newest series, Coachella Valley Street Scene, we will attempt to make sure the underground art culture of the desert is not overlooked and never forgotten.

In other news…. Coachella Fest.  So excited!  And not just excited for next year… but excited to finally release the Coachella Art Studios video from this year’s Coachella!  To warm you guys up we have released another batch of photos from our amazing experience in curating and producing the interactive craft installation inside the campgrounds at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 2012.  Make sure to check back this week to see what the Coachella Art Studios was like through the lens of the young and upcoming local photographer, David Mawby.  Video will be here by the end of the month… can’t wait!

Another thing to celebrate is that this weekend is a 3-day weekend, Memorial Day Weekend…. which (basically) means party…. with this weekend just so happening to be the last weekend of the month… which just so happens to be WORLD FAMOUS! – the monthly dance and craft party by Alf Alpha and The Coachella Valley Art Scene at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs!!!  We are sooooooo hyped for this month’s World Famous party… you don’t even know.  Nothing better then celebrating Summer then in the desert with your favorite DJ and Blogger/Crafter, Alf Alpha and The Coachella Valley Art Scene.  We just bought new decorations, new lights, booked a photographer for the photo booth and Alf Alpha is ready to rock all night long…. only question is… are you ready?!?!  See you there.  Here’s where you can RSVP:

If dance is a favorite art form of yours, but you’re more into the spectator aspect of it all, then we have something perfect for you to attend this weekend.  There will be a ballet performance at the Palm Springs Art Museum this Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.  At a reasonable price, and for the intellectually stimulating good time, you can’t beat it.  More information on the performance of Paquita & Hip Hop ballet numbers coming to a blog near you.

Speaking of the Palm Springs Art Museum, this Saturdaythey will be opening up the doors to their Palm Desert satellite with an Art Party celebration.  Free for everyone to view the space and participate!  We got a chance to check the space out the day it opened and it’s super cool.  Also worth noting, the Backyard Oasis exhibit is closing in Palm Springs this weekend and if you haven’t seen it then it’s a MUST that you make your way over to check it out.  Once you get there, you’ll see why I’m so obsessed with it and you will want to thank me a million times over…send all thank you emails to  😉

If you are in Palm Springs and looking for creative ways to make it to the Art Party, we thought it’d be a good idea to consider taking a green friendly way with a bunch of new friends…. Pedal to Paseo is a bike ride leaving from the Palm Springs Cyclery to Lululemon on El Paseo in Palm Desert at 6:30am on Saturday.  Once you and your bike mob arrive at lululemon the doors will fling open and invite you in for free food and a restorative yoga class.  Just remember to conserve your energy enough to bike back to Palm Springs for the World Famous party happening inside the Amigo Room at the Ace Hotel with Alf Alpha and The Coachella Valley Art Scene later that night!!!

If that sounds like too much activity for one day, no need to worry.  Just around the corner, happening next Tuesday, is the Palm Springs Critical Mass Bike Ride.  The desert is the perfect flat ground to ride your bike… why not do it in a large way and in a large group?

Another super exciting event happening next week that we are ultra excited about is the return of the AOK (Art of Kraft) pop-up shop/art show happening at BIRBA in Palm Springs.  Since this is the last show in it’s series, we thought we’d go out with a bang and make the event happen on a Sunday afternoon so everyone has a better opportunity of attending and supporting your local artist!  AOK is happening on Sunday, June 3rd from 11:00am – 2:00pm.  Make sure to swing by!!  This week we hope to get a couple artist profiles up of artists that will be featured in the show… make sure to check that out.  More details after the jump off.

Make sure to keep an eye out for all the Random blog posts that sometimes just pop up ou of nowhere.  You never know what might cross our path on the Interner this week that we would feel so compelled to share with you.

And, as always, make sure to check for the Things 2 Do Thursday blog post later this week to get the 411 on all the fun once the sun sets behind the mountains in the Coachella Valley.  One thing is for sure…this Memorial day weekend is going to be crackin’ in the Coachella Valley.  Looking forward to partying with you all this Saturday night at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs!
