SubverCinema is the Coachella Valley’s only free cinematheque daring enough to dedicate itself to unconventional, experimental, and transgressive film. This summer The Coachella Valley Art Center will be holding screenings of wild thought-provoking films from around the world once a week.
About the Curator:
James Montenegro is a Coachella resident and artist. His output includes the films Train to Nowhere (2011), Bitter Man (2012), The Men (2012), and The Third Time I Called You (2013). James Montenegro is also the writer of the book The Starvation Journal, which was self-published through Lulu Press in early 2013. In the past, he has collaborated with Coachella Valley bands Youth Pollution and Batskinners. James is currently working on a new film, set to be complete in August 2013 and a musical project involving collaborations with several east valley musicians. The name of the project is The Legendary Satellite Divinity. He is an active writer of poetry and short stories.
As founder and head of SubverCinema, James Montenegro curates what films are shown at the series and promotes screenings. SubverCinema was founded in September, 2011, and has recently moved to Indio at The Coachella Valley Art Center. The aim of the series is to exposed interested film viewers to films that are unconventional, experimental, and otherwise transgressive. The hope is that those who join and watch the films view what’s shown actively and participate in discussions afterward. SubverCinema is free and all one has to do to participate is show up with an open, active mind, ready to discuss film, art, and anything else critically.
