First and foremost, let’s start off by saying that we had an amazing time at FYF. Whether it was working at the craft tent or watching a band, it was all around fun.  FYF Fest has always been a favorite festival of ours (since way back in the day) and now to actually be able to be apart of it and interact with other fans by giving them a platform for them to make art is pretty unbelievable!  Thank you CraftFYF Team for being solid and of course thank you FYF Presents for having us!  We are already looking forward to next year.

(This was the line-up to the amazing concert that was FYF Fest 2013.  So good, right?!?!)

.

Last year, as you may remember, was our first year linking up with FYF Presents, Chilli Beans, & Goldenvoice to create our interactive craft installation, “CraftFYF.”  We were located near the vendors and were inside of a 20x20ft tent that was busting at the seems with people who were busy making all sorts of amazing DIY crafts.  We were like this art factory on the festival grounds.  And not only were people in our tent using their hands and right side of their brains to make cool stuff, but they were also meeting other concert goers by asking the stranger next to them something silly like, “can you pass me the Mod Podge?”

This year we were honored to come back, and were even given the opportunity to expand our operation.  Of course we said “F YES!” (get it? FYF Fest…F Yes…it sounds similar…okay, I’ll stop) In expanding the operation we went from a single 20×20 tent to a 40×40 in the general area AND an additional 20×20 tent in the Beer Gardens!!! Yeah, pretty f*cking cool.  We had never had two craft operations going off at the same time at a festival, but nevertheless it was a complete success!

Being that we had two different tents, in two different areas of the concert, we knew there was going to be two different vibes.  Our 40×40 tent we knew we’d have the most people there so we wanted to really bring it  – so we brought out our secret weapon, the man who not only rocks a dance floor but also art parties, Alf Alpha.  And without missing a beat he kept everyone’s creative spirits up the entire time.  And you know we’re talking about a 4 1/2 hour set, right?!  You can catch the vibe of what CraftFYF was like by listening to Alf Alpha’s LIVE set below:

One of our favorite things to do is to put limited amounts of signage in the tent.  This causes people to actually have to ask someone else who they don’t know, “what’s going on in here?”  That person usually answers with, “it’s free to make anything you want,” which then usually causes an eruption of joy in the person that asks and they end up hanging out for an hour or so and walking away with something special.

We basically lay out tons of free art materials on our tables and put our faith in the creative spirit that everyone will make something on their own.  Yes, we do have an educated staff who are there to guide someone if they get stuck, but there is no real ‘instructions’.  I mean, who really likes rules anyways????  Here is where you use your intuition.

And although that might a little chaotic, it’s totally not.  We do have focused craft projects such as; Make a Button, Design a Headband, Pain a Power Piece, Craft for Cell Phone Case, and many more.

Craft Project #1: Make Your Own Button

,

CraftFYF at FYF Fest hosted by The Coachella Valley Art Scene

The first step to making your own button is to go through our table of magazines and cut out the image you want.

Once you find it cut it out and bring it over to our button experts….

Our fantastic button experts showed people how to press their own button.

And the outcomes look like this!

Craft Project #2: Design a Headband

.

CraftFYF at FYF Fest hosted by The Coachella Valley Art Scene

A new craft to our operation that was invented this past Coachella Fest is headbands.  As you can imagine, this is one of our most popular ones.  Coming in a close 2nd to Make Your Own Buttons!

Pictured here is the mastermind to the headbands, Kristina (in the white dress).  Isn’t she genius?

We let people pick their own fabrics…

…but then require them to assemble it themselves.

And don’t think this is just a girl thing!  See that guy on the right making one too.

How cute is this girl?  Sporting a personalized headband and a button that she made at FYF Fest!

Craft Project #3: Power Pieces

.

CraftFYF at FYF Fest hosted by The Coachella Valley Art Scene

Power Pieces is one of my favorite crafts that was invented by my good friend and CVAS web designer, Ian Cush.  The idea of these is that they become that special accessory that either taps you back into reality or takes you to other dimensions.  You are the controller to your power piece.

Are only rule with this is; you can have one, only if you paint and string them yourself.

CraftFYF at FYF Fest hosted by The Coachella Valley Art Scene

Seems like everyone can live by that rule.

Power Pieces is a great craft for those who like to paint.  It’s also quite therapeutic for those who need a break from the concert.

I caught this chick making 10 Power Pieces!  One for all of her friends at the festival!  Pretty cool, like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Here is Part 2: string it up

We have a secret way of stringing the clay moldings that people paint on.  Once do the special string twist, you tie the ends together and wear it around your neck!

Project #4 : Design a Cell Phone Case

.

CraftFYF at FYF Fest hosted by The Coachella Valley Art Scene

We had hundreds of iPhone4 & iPhone5 cases for people to get creative with.  Here a girl is putting some colorful thread on a once boring plain white cellphone case.

As you can imagine, this craft gets a little crazy!  Everyone has an iphone and everyone wants a free case.

Pretty safe to say these were my favorite cell phone cases that were made that weekend.  Pink Pom Poms, what’s not to love here?!?

Craft Project #5 : PostFYF (send a postcard to yourself)

.

It’s tradition that we stay in contact with our crafters….via snail mail.  Bringing back the art of romance is not dead, just ask your mailman.

Do you think they are sending each letter a love letter?? We like to pretend they are <3

Craft #6 : Make Whatever with Whatever

.

CraftFYF at FYF Fest hosted by The Coachella Valley Art Scene

Hands down, my favorite thing about the culture of crafting is making something out of nothing.  We had a few tables that just had super random stuff on it to see what people could pull together….and man oh man did we see some good stuff out there!

CraftFYF 20×20 Tent in the Beer Gardens

.

CraftFYF at FYF Fest hosted by The Coachella Valley Art Scene

Our tent in the beer gardens was 1/2 the size of the other one on the main festival field.  We didn’t have a DJ in this one, but it was staffed with really cute chicks.

We offered Make Your Own Button, Craft a Cell Phone Case, Power Pieces, and Make Whatever with Whatever.

The vibe in here was totally different, everyone was 21 years old, with a drink in hand and really chatty.  Kind of the best place to pick up on chicks and cute guys at the festival….just sayin’.

A little cell phone crafting going on here…

Power Pieces going down, with a stiff drink at hand to help the creativity flow a little better.

It was quite popular!  Some people thought they were coming for Craft Beer, and were pleasantly surprised when it was “crafts” as in art projects.

.

.

And that’s it!

Shout out to all the crafters!  It wouldn’t be possible without you!
