If you have stopped by The Coachella Valley Art Scene gallery recently you probably laid eyes on one of Nacho Becerra’s Mexican-American Flags.  It is one of the most striking pieces hanging on our walls, and our most popular online sales item.  Nacho’s Flag has been sold and shipped to art lovers’  homes all over the nation.  With his recent success we have had many collectors wanting to know more about Nacho’s story, where is he from, and what’s the inspiration?  So we sent out fellow artist, Aaron Hansen, to catch up with Nacho Becerra at his studio on an artist compound that’s located in the middle of the desert to get some answers…

What can you tell us about you, the artist? Let’s start with your name, where you’re from and where you at now?

Sure.  My name is Ignacio Jose Becerra Marquez.  I am originally from Guanajuato, Mexico.  I now live in Desert Hot Springs, CA.
.
What brought you to the desert all the way from Guanajuato?
I had moved from Guanajuato to Mexicali when I was 16 years old.  I worked as a sign painter there for many years before coming to the desert, as many of us did jumping over the chain link fence that divides Mexico and the United States.  I still do not know what brought me to the desert, or why my family brought me here, but I am happy they did!
.
Nice, I’m sure the answer will find you soon.  So you ended up in a new land and that’s when you started to create these flags.  How did this creation come about? What sparked it, did you just start creating or was it an idea that kept shaping in your mind?
It was an idea that I had.  After hearing about the “Immigration Reform” I chose to use the sarape because to me it’s colors represent all the different people that would like to be “legal” in this beautiful and abundant country.
.
These flags have been very popular at The Coachella Valley Art Scene gallery, selling them all across the United States via online an in store.  What do you think about that?
I am just glad that people are accepting them.  I am happy knowing that they are interested in acquiring an piece of mine!
.
Will you making more soon?
Yes, I will be making more soon.  Thank you, everyone.
