Artist Statement

“I was born and raised in the Coachella Valley. My work is influenced by Mexican-American culture in Southern California and 1960s American fashion and textiles.

I focus on illustrating my own patterned designs that can be integrated into compositions that reference themes of street culture and promiscuity. All of the materials that I paint on are either found or have been donated to me. Recycled materials give my art a starting point for the story. It’s a useful technique in my process for the piece to transform from having one purpose in the beginning of production to becoming my own piece of decorative art. I illustrate my immediate surroundings so that my typography reflects contemporary culture and music. I draw decorative art for interior decor purposes. The patterned designs that I use are typically paisley adornments in clothing, but by painting them they enhance and express the emotional aesthetics of sex and fashion.”

About:

Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Jennifer started her journey of artistic self-expression at a very young age. Along with virtually all her free time spent drawing and painting, she began sewing at 11, designing her own clothes. During Junior High School, Jennifer took extra art classes after school. In High School, she studied photography, sculpture, drawing and painting. Additionally, Jennifer took welding and soldering classes to design her own jewelry creations.

Graduating early from High School, she had her first brush with art school attending The Art Institute of Chicago for a class specifically based on ink and paper. This was when she fell in love with ink; on paper, canvas, walls, her clothes, skin – any surface available or possible.

At 18, Jennifer moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in Fine Arts at Otis College of Art and Design where she majored in Fine Arts, with a focus on painting. She was exposed to a variety of mediums, from guache to latex, but was already infatuated by ink.

Jennifer is inspired and influenced by the artistry of Camille Rose Garcia, Mark Ryden and Erte’. She has since collaborated and worked with artists such as Gary Garner, and James Franco.

Jennifer’s art centers on the human body, exploring repetition, proportion and the layering of figures and body parts to portray the dichotomy between the salaciously grotesque, and the enchanting erotic beauty we experience and feel.
