Jazz is one of my most beloved and inspiring genres of music.  It’s genius lies in it’s difficulty to define.  There are no rules to abide by, no formats to follow, yet it has influenced music indefinitely.  Jazz’s influence can be found in modern day music, especially Hip Hop (see music video reference below).  However, the attitude of jazz, the feeling of jazz, is pure, 100%, punk.

When we first got word of the Jazz series in Indian Wells we were stoked.  Any opportunity to listen to music legends pour their hearts into saxophones and trumpets is a very rare experience!  Especially out here in the Coachella Valley.

The Groove at the Westin brings in world class jazz acts right into our own backyard.  The production level is outstanding and the experience as a whole is uplifting and memorable.

For any jazz fan, jazz inquisitor, jazz student – this is the event for you to follow.  Or, if you are simply looking for a great date to take a lover to, look no further.

Make sure to dress nice, because this event is all brass and all class.

The Westin Mission Hills is seducing the Coachella Valley with a continuing series featuring world-class musicians called Grooves at The Westin. This jazzy series kicked off on Saturday, February 6th inside one of the Westin’s beautiful ballrooms.

Thankfully, we had the pleasure of checking out the first out of four concerts presented at The Westin Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage.

(YouTube video to give a taste of what performance was like)

Grooves at The Westin kicked off their first concert with an all-star lineup featuring Jazz and Gospel guitarist/singer Jonathan Butler, as well as the former lead singer of The Temptations and Drifters Louis Price. Saxman Everette Harp, vocalist Lynne Fiddmont, Freddie Washington on bass, Land Richards on drums, and more veteran musicians accompanied these two R&B and Jazz All-Stars.

The show began at 7:00PM, we had found our seats and were immediately swooned by the sound of saxman, Everette Harp accompanied by the all-star jazz band.

As the band finished up, Jonathan Butler was ready to take the stage. He sang and serenaded everyone in the ballroom with his astounding talents both guitar-wise and vocally.

The ballroom was groovin’ to the gospel of Jonathan Butler until he finished his set.

Throughout the night, waiters would come around and offer beverages and food. The vibe of the ballroom was electric. Lovers of jazz and R&B came together to groove and dance.

The night topped off with Louis Price who encouraged the audience to sing along and dance to classic songs such as “My Girl” and “Just My Imagination.”

Grooves at The Westin will continue through the end of March.
