Free Community Day at the Palm Springs Art Museum

Check it out: “The City of Indian Wells has made it possible for any member of the Coachella Valley to experience the Palm Springs Art Museum! Thanks to an Indian Wells contribution, the museum will be completely free to all visitors during normal business hours on Thursday, March 26, 2009 from noon to 8 p.m. Guests may enjoy the current exhibition Wayne Thiebaud: 70 Years of Painting, also sponsored by the City of Indian Wells. A free family activity, Painting Words, will start at 6 p.m. in Zone 101 in the Hoover Gallery and will teach children and their families how to paint fire, ice, dark and light while imaging what words are in the paintings of the Thiebaud exhibition.

Palm Springs Photo Festival
March 29 – April 3

The annual Palm Springs Photo Festival is an intense week-long event for professional, emerging and serious advanced amateur photographers. As a special benefit to museum members, the organizers of the Photo Festival will allow museum members to attend any of the evening symposiums, held in the Annenberg Theater. The festival will present an important symposium each day and will include important and influential panelists from throughout the country. Presentations will be daily from 5:00-6:30 p.m.

On Monday, March 30 at 9:15 p.m. Daniell Cornell (Deputy Director for Art and Senior Curator at the Palm Springs Art Museum) will present a lecture on the museum’s exhibition Robert Mapplethorpe: Portraits, followed by a talk by Duane Michaels. All museum members are encouraged to attend this late-night event, which will be followed by late-night reception in the museum’s Marcuse Sculpture Garden.

Tuesday 3/31 THE EDITORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY CONFERENCE Moderated by Holly Hughes (Editor, PDN). Join a group of top magazine photo editors including Laurie Kratochvil (Readers Digest), Mark Murrmann (Mother Jones), James Colton (Sports Illustrated), Colin Crawford (Los Angeles Times) and Zana Woods (Wired Magazine) to discuss issues important to all editorial photographers.
Wednesday 4/1 American PHOTO Presents: ADVOCACY IN THE ARTS: An Important Conversation About the Power of Photography to Affect Social Change. Thursday 4/2 Photo District News presents: PDN’s 30 EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHERS CONFERENCE: Photographers featured in the 2009 PDN’s 30 issue will discuss getting started in the photography industry.

The photographers will give specifics on how they got their first jobs and structured (and more importantly, paid for) their first promotional efforts. They will discuss what they learned in school and what they wish they’d been taught as well as share career advice you won’t hear anywhere else. Moderated by Holly Hughes (Editor, PDN).
