Annual Student Scholarship Exhibition @ COD’s Mark Art Center details:
PALM DESERT, CA—The Walter N. Marks Center for the Arts at College of the Desert is once again presenting its annual student scholarship exhibition, which this year includes scholarships made possible by the Dumont Foundation as well as the first annual Nancy H. Bacon Art Scholarship. In addition to work by COD students, the Marks Art Center is also hosting an exhibition sponsored by Palm Springs Unified School District—Art as Alternative—artwork from alternative education students attending Ramon Alternative Center, Desert Hot Springs Alternative Center, and Mount San Jacinto Continuation High School, that will be in the Alumni Association Gallery.
The exhibition opens for viewing on Monday, May 9, with an artists’ reception that is free and open to the public on Wednesday, May 11 from 5:00-7:00 pm; musical entertainment will be provided by DJ Alf Alpha, who recently played the Coachella Festival, and a free do-it-yourself craft table will be provided by The Coachella Valley Art Scene. Much of the scholarship recipients’ artwork is for sale, thus providing an excellent opportunity to support students while acquiring affordable, original art. The Marks Art Center is always free and open to the public, Monday-Thursday, 12:00-4:00 pm, and by appointment; for more information, please call (760) 776-7278.

About the Scholarship program:
Dumont Foundation scholarships are awarded to full-time COD students whose major area of study is Art, Digital Design and Production, or Architecture, and who demonstrate financial need as well as scholastic and portfolio achievement. For the 2010-2011 academic year, Dumont Foundation Scholarships ranged from $250 to $1,000, with outstanding portfolio and merit scholarships also awarded. This year, twelve students qualified for scholarships: Brenda Beets-Brown, Amanda Emmett, Betty Hill, Sallé Kirby, Michael Navarro, Virginia Santillanes, Dominic Serna, and Lynda White, were awarded scholarships of $500; Josiah Bolth, Andrew Esquivel Toscano, and Lazaro Sanchez were recognized with $1,000 portfolio scholarships; and Saoirse O’Sullivan was awarded a $1,000 merit and portfolio scholarship. In addition to receiving a Dumont scholarship, Andrew Esquivel Toscano was awarded the first annual Nancy H. Bacon Scholarship, in memory of artist Nancy H. Bacon; the $750 scholarship, funded by an endowment established by the Bacon family, provides assistance for tuition, books, and art supplies. Three additional art majors—Jose Rocha, Brittney Passmore, and Sydney Tuck—were recognized this year for demonstrating improvement in their GPA, portfolio development, and for innovative use of materials.
Student artwork can also be seen on the Garrow Gallery Wall in the COD Library: currently on display are photographs by COD international student Junko Kobayashi, who is completing her last semester here; library hours are Monday-Thursday 8:00 am-8:00 pm, Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm.
